Poem: Awaken

This hit me while I was driving in to work at lunch.  I didn't get a chance to jot it down until this evening.  I feel like I'm missing something that I thought at the time, maybe even a whole verse.  If so, though, I can't recall it, so here it is...

it slowly unfolds in front of you
catching you by surprise
you want to shout it from the mountains
but silence would be wise

light doesn't cover darkness
nearly as well as darkness covers light
pile on enough darknesss
and it will vanish from your sight

travel back to the beginning
to find a proper end
travel back to the beginning
to find yourself again

take a look deep inside
and then look even deeper
shake away the slumber
and awaken the sleeper

Poem: The Smoker

He smokes
He chokes
He fails to appreciate
His part in his early demise

Hurting those he loves
Hurting those he hates
Yet he never hesitates
To question if it is wise

The grip of the addiction
Blinds him to the affliction
And he doesn't begin to see
That it holds him like a vise

The day will come
Where he will succumb
And how many years lost
He can only surmise

He smokes
He chokes
He slowly goes broke
Until one day he dies

Poem: Captains of Industry

Captains of industry
Destroyers of man
Make you a profit?
You bet we can.

My air and my water
Suit me just fine.
You say yours doesn't?
Well, don't think you'll get mine.

Your health and your safety
Are not our concern
If it makes us a dollar,
We'll let the world burn.

By the the people, for the people
Sure is a nice thought
But didn't we tell you?
Your government's been bought.

Draining your coffers
While claiming success,
That spending on the poor
Is the true excess.

Down with the people
Up with the corporation
Only your enslavement
Can bring our emancipation.

Captains of industry
Destroyers of man
Make you a profit?
You bet we can.

Poem: The Mirror

This is a poem I originally posted on my friend Mary's blog, in response to and inspired by her post, "Hiccup in Time".

"I am you," she said,
matter-of-factly.
"How can that be," I asked,
"that you're me exactly?"

"You don't understand," she said,
then said it again.
"Look in the mirror," she said,
"and you will see your friend."

"I only see myself," I said,
"I'm the only one here."
"Then you don't see anything," she said,
"You need another mirror."

"My mirror is just fine," I said,
"so just let me be."
"Then maybe it's you," she said,
"Perhaps you can't see."

Poem: Much Ado About Nothing

A recent experience with a coworker prompted this one.

he gawks
he squawks
he makes much ado
about nothing

his speciality
is triviality
and to the rest
it is banality

important, no
a burden, yes
whom might care
is anyone's guess

he gawks
he squawks
he is much ado...

about nothing
